How to Increase the Life of Your Tires

A set of tires is a real expense, and yet most drivers get far fewer miles out of them than they could. The difference between a tire that lasts 25,000 miles and the same tire lasting 45,000 usually comes down to a handful of simple habits. None of them are difficult.

1. Keep them at the right pressure

This is the single biggest factor. Under-inflated tires flex too much, run hot, and wear out at the edges — and they cost you fuel. Over-inflated tires wear out in the centre and give a harsher ride. Check pressure at least monthly, when the tires are cold, against the figure on the sticker inside the driver's door (not the number on the tire itself, which is the maximum).

2. Rotate them regularly

Your front and rear tires wear at different rates because the front tires handle steering and, on most cars, the power. Rotating them — swapping their positions on a schedule — evens that out so the whole set wears down together. Every 5,000 to 8,000 miles is a common interval.

3. Keep the alignment true

Poor alignment is one of the fastest ways to destroy a tire, scrubbing rubber off one edge with every mile. It is invisible until the wear shows up, which is why we gave it its own article: Wheel Alignment: Why It Matters explains the warning signs and how often to check.

4. Drive a little more gently

  • Hard acceleration and heavy braking scrub off tread quickly.
  • Taking corners fast wears the shoulders of the tire.
  • Kerbs and potholes damage sidewalls and knock the alignment out.
  • Overloading the car makes the tires run hot and wear faster.

None of this means driving timidly — just that smoothness is rewarded with longer tire life.

5. Inspect them now and then

A quick monthly look — pressure, tread depth with a penny, and a glance for cracks, bulges or objects stuck in the tread — catches small problems before they cost you a whole tire. If you find uneven wear, our guide on How to Know When Your Tires Need Replacing explains what the pattern is telling you.

Buying your next set soon? Starting with the right tire for how you actually drive makes all of this easier. Our Choosing the Right Tires for Your Vehicle guide walks through it.
